Posted is an editorial design project celebrating New Zealand postage stamps — their visual beauty, cultural history, and the role they play in connecting people across generations. The idea began with my late grandfather, Bill Baylis, who left me his personal stamp collection. What started as curiosity soon became a design challenge: how could I reinterpret these small, nostalgic artefacts and present them in a way that would engage a younger audience?

The book explores the artistry of stamp design while tracing New Zealand’s social and visual identity through decades of postal history. Each chapter highlights different eras, themes, and stories behind the stamps — from national events to everyday moments. I wanted Posted to feel both archival and contemporary, giving weight to history while maintaining a clean, modern design language.

Visually, the design draws from structured grids, subtle perforation details, whilest the paper used echo envelopes and printed sheets. Careful use of white space, balanced typography, and strong hierarchy allows the stamps to sit as miniature works of art. Pull quotes, captions, and curated image layouts guide the reader through each spread, creating a sense of rhythm and flow across the book.

Posted became more than just a publication project; it was a personal exploration of legacy, memory, and design’s ability to preserve culture. Through it, I strengthened my editorial and storytelling skills, deepened my understanding of visual systems, and developed a new appreciation for the connection between design, heritage, and emotion.
    Sport Circle

    Sports Circle was a third-year group project with Tim Bryant and Ursula Pine, focusing on helping newcomers to Wellington connect through sport. 

    Our goal was to make joining in feel easy, fun, and social. The design system used bright colours, approachable layouts, and clean, well-considered typography. Our campaign included a Video/YouTube ad, motion posters, merchandise, social media, and even a game truck that encouraged people to meet others through play.

    I learned a lot about teamwork and how to bring large-scale campaigns together in a consistent, cohesive way.


      Sport Social Media

      Sports design has been a chance for me to merge two of my biggest passions — design and sport, most notably rugby. Through creating player-focused graphics, I’ve developed my eye for composition, hierarchy, and typography. I aim to make each piece bold, high-contrast, and full of personality, reflecting both the player and the sport’s energy. 

      A few of my designs have even been shared by the athletes themselves, which has been a rewarding experience. I regularly create new pieces to keep experimenting and refining my approach.


      20 Type Faces


      20 Typefaces was a project exploring how typography communicates meaning through form, context, and emotion. One of the typefaces I chose to study was Tank Man from Vocal Type — a font inspired by the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Its sharp, angular forms and bold weight symbolise resistance and courage, showing how design can carry historical and emotional depth.

      Each chosen typeface was explored through research and expressive layout, examining how structure, proportion, and rhythm shape tone and legibility. I focused on letting the letterforms speak for themselves through minimal colour and strong composition.

      This project deepened my understanding of how typography can tell stories beyond language — revealing how the smallest design details can express identity, history, and meaning.



      Miss Fortune


      Miss Fortune was a second-year brand communication project group project with Tim Bryant, reimagining fortune cookies as a delicious yet playful social experience.

      The concept combined flavoured cookies with mini-games designed to spark interaction between people — whether at a picnic, party, or family gathering. The brand had a cheeky, humorous tone and was positioned as a potential revival product for Ernest Adams, helping them re-enter the market against modern snack competitors. The project balanced fun, character, and strategy, all centred on connecting people through food.


      Sing Wellington



      For the “Sing Wellington” Barbershop Music Convention, I created a full campaign of posters, digital displays, and social media assets across Instagram, Facebook, and venue screens. 

      My goal was to develop a cohesive visual identity that tied every element together. I also designed the event’s logo, which became the foundation for all branding. This project taught me about photo manipulation and creating dynamic, movement-based visuals that captured the energy of live performance. Seeing my designs displayed throughout the Saint James Theatre was a real highlight.


      Righteous Pink Ginners

        The Righteous Pink Ginners are one of New Zealand’s oldest and most iconic social rugby teams, with a long history and strong community following.

         I worked closely with the team to design their new logo and jersey — a refresh that honoured their heritage while introducing a modern identity. Alongside this, I created a cohesive set of social media designs to strengthen their online presence. Each post had a clear purpose: sharing team lists, fixtures, match results, and photo-led content to build excitement around game day. This project taught me the value of visual consistency, maintaining high design standards, and collaborating effectively to produce engaging, community-driven content each week.

        Visually, the designs focused on bold type, clean hierarchy, and high-contrast colour pairings drawn from the team’s signature pink. Strong imagery and layered textures gave the posts a sense of energy and motion, echoing the team’s on-field personality. Every element, from typography to layout rhythm, was considered to make the Pink Ginners’ identity stand out.


        About Me

        Hi, I’m Max Currington, a 22-year-old graphic designer based in Wellington, New Zealand. I specialise in editorial design, sports design, and digital design (including app and web). I’m passionate about creating bold, purposeful work that connects design with real-world culture, especially through sport, music, and community.

        Right now, I’m focusing on sports design, developing visual systems for teams, clubs, and athletes that bring energy and identity to the game. I’ve also explored design in music and branding, combining my love for sound, sport, and storytelling through visual communication.

        Outside of design, I play rugby for a social team, coach younger players, and serve on my rugby club’s committee. I’m also the Chairman of Massey University’s first-ever VCD Design Club, helping students connect, collaborate, and grow as designers.

        When I’m not designing or on the field, you’ll probably find me cooking, listening to music, or playing guitar. I’m driven by creativity in all forms, whether that’s crafting a strong visual identity or perfecting a new recipe.
